AI SEARCH

An AI visibility tool for mentions and citations

Badgerfly's AI Visibility is an AI visibility tool for agencies and SEO teams. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews the questions a business's customers would ask, and records whether the business is mentioned and whether its site is cited. With Google Analytics connected, it also counts visits from AI assistants.

The AI Visibility question view: one question cited in 6 of 7 answers

Two halves of the job

The work has two parts, and Badgerfly covers both:

  • Can AI systems read the site? Every Site Audit scores AI search health and shows which AI crawlers the site lets in.
  • Do AI answers mention the business? The AI Visibility module asks, records and counts.

The first is a technical check you can fix. The second is a measurement you can watch over time.

How a run works

Start with a question set: the questions the business's customers would ask, in their own words. A typical set has 40 to 80 questions and can hold up to 120. It can be written for you or drawn from the site's Search Console queries.

On each run, every question goes to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and the module records what came back. ChatGPT and Gemini get each question 5 times, or 7 for the questions that signal buying intent, because their answers vary from one asking to the next. Google AI Overviews are checked once per question. Start a run by hand, or set it to repeat weekly, every two weeks or monthly.

Term What it means
Mention The business is named in the assistant's answer.
Citation The assistant links to the project's site as a source for its answer.
Engines ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, the places a run asks.
Run One asking of the whole question set.

A mention means the assistant knows the business. A citation means it sent the reader toward the site. Both are counted, question by question and engine by engine, so you can see where the business shows up and where it does not.

Visits from AI assistants

Connect Google Analytics and the module adds the other side: sessions that arrived from an AI assistant, and the pages they landed on. That tells you which pages AI answers actually send people to. Badgerfly's access to Analytics is read-only.

AI search health, in every Site Audit

An AI search visibility tool is only half the job if the site cannot be read. Every Site Audit scores AI search health from 0 to 100 alongside site health: how well the site is built for AI assistants and answer engines, from clean markup, pages that can be read, and content a machine can understand.

The By topic tab lists the AI crawlers the audit checks and what the site's robots.txt says to each. A site that blocks every AI crawler it is checked against, or keeps key pages from them, is reported as an error in the same list as a broken link. The Rendering tab shows what only appears after scripts run, which assistants that read plain HTML may miss.

Read the trend, not one answer

An AI assistant can answer the same question differently from one asking to the next, which is why each question is asked more than once. Even so, one run is a sample; several runs show a pattern. AI Visibility keeps every run, so the useful reading is how often the business is mentioned and cited across them, and whether that is moving. We do not claim to predict or control what an assistant says. The module measures it, and the audit checks that nothing in the site's own setup is standing in the way.

Where it fits

AI Visibility sits in the Tracking and Reports group, next to Position Tracker. Position Tracker shows the search result features on each tracked search, including when an AI answer appears; AI Visibility shows whether the assistants name or cite the business. The Dashboard puts each project's AI search health score beside its site health, so a drop shows without opening the project.

Built for teams with many projects

For an agency, the question set is per project: the questions a roofer's customers ask are not a dentist's. Set each one up once, run it, and you have a measured answer for the business you work for when they ask whether AI assistants know about them.

What it costs

Each run uses tokens, while reopening an earlier run costs nothing and the AI search health score comes with every Site Audit. How tokens work

Questions

What is an AI visibility tool?

A tool, sometimes called an LLM visibility tool, that checks whether AI assistants mention a business, and link to its site, when people ask about what it offers. Badgerfly's version also counts the visits those answers send.

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention names the business in the answer. A citation links to the business's site as a source.

Which AI assistants does it ask?

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. ChatGPT and Gemini get each question 5 times (7 for questions that signal buying intent) because their answers vary; AI Overviews are checked once per question.

Do I need Google Analytics?

Only for the visits. Mentions and citations are recorded without it.

Does Site Audit check AI crawlers?

Yes. Every audit lists the AI crawlers it checks, shows which ones robots.txt allows, and scores AI search health.
