Find the pages that compete with each other
Badgerfly's Keyword Cannibalization module is a keyword cannibalization tool for agencies and SEO teams. Using a site's Search Console data or an imported file, it groups the pages that compete for the same search, names the page that should win, and recommends a fix for each of the others.

What keyword cannibalization is
Keyword cannibalization, or SEO cannibalization, is when two or more pages on the same site compete for the same search. Instead of one clear page for the search, Google sees several that overlap, and it can switch between them. The pages hold each other back, and the site loses rankings to itself. It is common on sites that have grown for years without a content plan: a service page and a blog post on the same subject, two posts written a year apart, a set of near-identical pages.
Rotation is the clearest sign
The module looks for rotation: Google switching between two of the site's pages for the same search from day to day. A page that ranks one week and gives way to its neighbour the next is the clearest sign of a conflict, and it is hard to spot by eye in Search Console. Each group in the result says how many times Google switched its preferred page, and over how many weeks of data.
What a result shows
The top line says how many pages were checked and how many competing groups were found. Each group then shows:
Each group is one decision: keep the page marked as the keeper and apply the listed action to each of the others. The fix is made to the other pages.
- The competing pages and the searches they share
- A score out of 100 for how much the pages overlap, graded like a site audit issue
- Disputed searches, how many searches the pages share and their monthly searches
- Urgency, how pressing the fix is, from how serious the conflict is and the traffic at stake
- Rotation, how often Google switched its preferred page
- The keeper, the page that should win the search
- A recommended action for every other page in the group
How to fix keyword cannibalization
The module recommends one of four fixes for each page that is not the keeper:
| Fix | What it does |
|---|---|
| Merge | Combine the pages into the keeper, so one page carries the content. |
| Redirect | Send the other page's address to the keeper. |
| Point one at the other | Mark the keeper as the original (a canonical), so the other page can stay live. |
| Make them clearly different | Rework the other page so it targets a different search. |
Each result also says how it was worked out, so you can check the recommendation against what you know about the site before anything changes.
Search Console data, or an imported file
The module works from the site's real search data. Connect Google Search Console (read-only) and it reads which pages appeared for which searches, day by day. If Search Console is not connected for the site, import a CSV of URLs and keywords instead.
Check that the fix held
Every result ends with the next step. Track the disputed searches sends them to Position Tracker to see whether the fix holds. Add this to a report puts the findings in front of the business you work for. Results export to CSV for a developer or a writer.
Who it is for
- Agencies taking on a new site that has grown without a plan, to find the pages getting in each other's way before writing anything new.
- Content teams with a large back catalogue, before writing another post on a subject the site already covers.
- SEO leads after a migration or a merge of two sites, when overlapping pages arrive together.
A keyword cannibalization checker that names the fix
A list of pages that share keywords is a start. The useful part is which page should win and what to do with the rest, ranked by urgency.
What it costs
Each run uses tokens, and reopening a finished result costs nothing. How tokens work
Questions
What is keyword cannibalization in SEO?
Two or more pages on one site competing for the same search, so neither ranks as well as one clear page would. Google switching between the pages from day to day is the clearest sign.
How do I fix keyword cannibalization?
Choose the page that should win, then merge the others into it, redirect them, point them at it as the original, or rework them to target a different search. The module recommends one of these for each page.
Do I need Search Console?
It is the easiest source, but not required. You can import a CSV of URLs and keywords instead.
Is every overlap a problem?
No. Each group gets a score and an urgency, so you can start with the conflicts worth fixing and leave minor overlaps alone.
